The BC 8s
The BC 8s Special Interest Group (SIG) was created in or around 2002 by Derek Pinton, owner of a Laguna Green 850Ci. Shortly after the purchase of my first E31, total membership rose from 6 to 7. Most of the BC 8s events at the time were part of the BMWCCA BC local car club with very few E31 specific events. The E31s were somewhat rare (and expensive) at the time, so membership remained stable around the 7 car number. Then came the influx of the Japanese spec 850s, arriving in virtual waves from across the pond starting in 2006. Around that time, Derek sold his 850 and left the group but the BC 8s continued on, adding new E31s until today where our active roster totals some 67 owners.

1991 850i, Brilliant Red/Black, Canadian spec
Purchased my first E31 from an owner in Winnipeg in May 2002 and still have that car, now with 313k kms. It was the first of 17 E31s (including 13 parts cars) that I have owned. Have attended 4 8-Fests, 5 ARRWBTT events, numerous WrenchFests in Washington and California and am a member of the 8-Fest Hall of Fame.
1991 850i, Calypso/Light Parchment, Canadian spec
I have been a member of the BMW Car Club of America since 1997, and am currently, the BMWCCA E31 Chapter president. Originally purchased my 1991 8 Series on July 1, 2011- from the original owner. This car was purchased new from Auto West BMW.
My first BMW was a second hand 1974 BMW 2002Tii purchased in the early ‘80’s; looking back, I should never have let that one go! Since then, I have owned a 1985 735i and 1983 535i, three E24 635 CSi’s and several E30 325’s. Parked in my garage today you will find the 1991 850i and a 2001 E46 330Ci coupe.
Attended: 2013 10th Anniversary 8-Fest Garberville, California; Legends of the Autobahn Pebble Beach/Monterey 2014 and again for BMW’s 100th Anniversary in 2016; Munich visit in 2017- toured the BMW Museum, BMW Welt, BMW Classic and the Dingolfing BMW plant where the E31 was originally produced.
Newsletter & Creative Director:
1991 Mauritius Blue/Gray, Japanese spec
Back in 2012 while living in Kerrisdale (Vancouver, BC), I was desperately scanning the classified section of the The Province newspaper for a replacement daily-driver. With luck, I stumbled onto a brief listing describing a car that immediately revived my imagination; an imagination that goes back when I was a poor, university student of industrial design and back when BMW just introduced the E31 to the world. Fortunately, my dream came true as becoming the 3rd Canadian owner of an 850i in Mauritius blue. For our SIG, I lend my creativity and skills to ensure communication continuity and to spawn owners’ enthusiasm through our newsletter and other printed material. Recently, my professional experience has led to efficient design and procurement of BC8s window decals and banner (flag) equipment. Ownership of my 850i has allowed me to discover more of beautiful British Columbia, learn more about automotive manufacturing and technology, practice various maintenance jobs, meet very interesting people, and make some close friendships; all within and outside of the SIG. By the way, when I am not in my 850i, sometimes you may see me horsing-around the Lower Mainland of BC either in my 2009 Smart car or in my restored 1973 Ford F250 pick-up (in BC Hydro blue).
